After much speculation, and rumours galore, it has finally been confirmed by X-Men Producer Lauren Shuler Donner, that Channing Tatum will play Gambit, the New Orleans rogue, in a future X-men movie. She let the news slip at the red carpet premiere of X-Men: Days of Future Past last night.
It’s no secret that they’ve been in talks about the role. Tatum expressed interest a while back, stating that Gambit, otherwise known as Remy LeBeau, was his favourite X-Men; and Shuler Donner stated that she’d love him in one of her movies. Now it appears that the meetings weren’t for nothing. Exactly what movie he will appear in hasn’t been confirmed, but X-Men Apocalypse is the next movie to hit our screens, with an estimated release date of 27th May 2016.
I’m not sure what I think about this announcement. I’ve never been a massive fan of Tatum, but I think that anyone who is expressively passionate about a certain role deserves the chance to play it. Let’s face it, somebody who adores Gambit as a character, and knows a lot about him, is instantly going to do better than someone who doesn’t even have a clue who the X-Man is.
