The nerd mecca that is San Diego Comic Con 2014 has finally come to a close. Renowned for its massive announcements on both upcoming movie and television shows, and usually loads of comic, game and toy releases as well – this year certainly didn’t disappoint.
Here are my Highlights:
10. Game of Thrones
HBOs Game of Thrones series probably had the biggest reveal this year, coming in the form of 11 brand new cast members, who are set to join the latest season. Series 5 will focus heavily on Dorne, a part of Westeros we haven’t seen yet in the show. They revealed the actors who will be playing Doran Martell, Trystane Martell, Myrcella Baratheon, Areo Hotah, Yezzan, Nymeria Sand, Tyene Sand, Obara Sand, and High Sparrow.
9. Hunger Games: Mockingjay
As soon as Comic Con started, everyone was buzzing about Mokingjay, the Hunger Games sequal, with the release of a rather stunning poster. It’s the third movie in the Hunger Games franchise; part one of two movies based on Suzanne Collins’ third book. If that wasn’t enough, the first teaser trailer also got released. It features heavily on Katniss, and introduces new characters played by Julianne Moore, and Natalie Dormer from Game of Thrones.
8. Avengers: Age of Ultron
Marvel had a particularly strong presence this year, with announcements for both Ant-Man, and Guardians of the Galaxy. They also held a panel for the upcoming Avengers: Age of Ultron movie, which included all 11 primary cast members – minus Scarlett Johanson who is currently preggers. The panel introduced Josh Brolin, who will be playing Thanos in the upcoming film as well as showing a teaser of the movie. You might have caught recordings of it flying around the internet, but it keeps getting taken down pretty speedily. They’ve also released a rather stunning 8 part poster.
Christopher Nolan made a surprise appearance this year, accompanied by actor Matthew MaConaughey. They were promoting their upcoming film; Interstellar, but revealed very little information. Nolan did however mention that the film will be about ‘humans, and what it is to be human’, whilst previewing it’s first trailer. I have loved everything Nolan has ever directed, so I’m insanely excited about this film.
6. Walking Dead
A huge amount of television series previewed their new trailers at comic con this year; Gotham, Arrow, and The Flash to name a few. One I was particularly excited about however, was for AMC’s The Walking Dead series. The series returns in October, and the trailer gives us an idea about what to expect, answering a few questions that were left hanging at the end of the previous season. Looks like this series will involve a trip to Washington DC.
5. Batman ’66 boxset
Batman fans were in for a treat when none other than Adam West himself revealed more details on the Batman ’66 boxset at Comic Con. It looks glorious, and was probably my favourite non movie/show related announcement. The complete series will be released on Blu Ray and DVD on 11th November. There will also be a Limited Edition set, which includes a Hot Wheel replica of the Batmobile, 44 trading cards, a detailed episode guide, and a note from Adam West.
4. The Hobbit
The final movie in Peter Jacksons Hobbit Trilogy; The Battle of Five Armies, got it’s first trailer over the comic con weekend – I have high hopes. The Desolation of Smaug disappointed me somewhat, with it’s cringey inter-species romance, and it’s unnecessarily long Dwarf/Dragon chase. This trailer brings back my excitement for the franchise. The movie looks like it will be more action packed than ever, with a slightly more serious tone. The final instalment is meant to form as a link between the two trilogies, I guess that’s why we keep encountering a lot of The Lord of the Rings cast.
Fans of the Merc with the mouth have been having a field day since Comic Con. Footage of a potential Deadpool movie has been leaked onto the internet. I’ve seen it a couple of times, but the videos keep getting taken down – I guess Marvel don’t want to get our hopes up just yet. It’s essentially a screen test. To be honest, I’m not entirely sure what that entails, but it’s got me super excited. The video portrays a CGI scene of Deadpool being badass, hopefully someone will release another version soon. Deadpool is voiced by Ryan Reynolds.
2. Batman vs Superman
Like most years gone by, 2014 was dominated by Comic giants; Marvel and DC. DC started off by releasing a brand new photo of Ben Affleck in his Batsuit for the upcoming movie, Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice. It’s an up close shot, so you can see the iconic Batman Cowl in all of its glory, including the super cute little bat ears. It’s even in colour unlike the first image release, not that it makes much of a difference – and Affleck still looks bloody miserable.
They also revealed the highly anticipated Wonder Woman money shot, featuring actress Gal Gadot. So many comic fans were worried about Gadot portraying such an independent, empowering female. I hope they’re a little more relaxed now. She looks perfect – insanely stunning, toned to perfection, and badass as f*ck.
1. Mad Max
Mad Max: Fury Road had its first trailer released for the upcoming movie. This was probably one of the biggest surprise announcements, and ultimately one of my favourites. The trailer is absolutely epic, showing a high speed whacky races style car chase across the desert. I just had to post about it as soon as I saw the trailer, so you can read more about it here. There are also a load of character posters to admire.
