What Does Being A Geek Mean To You?

Happy Geek Pride Day! If you’re reading this blog, then you’re probably slightly geeky inclined. You may not know that you’re a geek, but chances are that if you’re passionate about something – you know that excitable, hyperventilating, almost stalker like passion – you’re probably a geek.

Now, that of course is my own personal opinion, because the term Geek mean’s something different to everybody. As someone who was labelled ‘geek’ super young, purely because they were clever, liked to read, and wore glasses to school, I haven’t always been fond of the term.

In fact, I wanted nothing to do with the term. I just couldn’t get my head around the fact that if you looked a certain way, you were called a geek. And that’s still how a lot of people see it. They think that if somebody is smart or different, then they’re a geek.

But I’ve come to realise that being a geek isn’t a label, it’s a feeling. I’ve had a lot of time to think about what being a geek means to me, and I think Simon Pegg described it best:

Being a geek is all about being honest about what you enjoy and not being afraid to demonstrate that affection. It means never having to play it cool about how much you like something. It’s basically a license to proudly emote on a somewhat childish level rather than behave like a supposed adult. Being a geek is extremely liberating.

So what does being a geek mean to me?

It means I can get excited about movies years before they come out. It means I have a library full of amazing books that I can easily teleport in to. It means I can spend hours playing video games and completely forget about the world I actually live in. It means I can collect toys because toys are awesome and anyone who tells you they aren’t obviously hasn’t looked or played with one in about 20 years. It means I live an ordinary life like everyone else – I go to work, and eat, and sleep – but I also have one kick ass imagination that never allows anything to get truly boring.

What does being a geek mean to you? Let me know.

Geek Picks of the Week

Star Lord T-Shirt | If you’ve seen the new Guardians of the Galaxy movie, you’ll have noticed that Star Lord is rocking a new Tshirt. It’s pretty hard to miss – containing Chris Pratt’s rippling muscles and all. At first I thought it said something like Yeah Baby, but apparently it reads Gears Shift, so if you have some of your own gears to shift, Redbubble have created a pretty accurate version of this already iconic tee. And if you want a long sleeved version, you can find it here.

Anne of Green Gables Print | Have you watched Netflix’s new series Anne with an ‘E’ yet? If you have, chances are you fell for Anne Shirley just as I did. She’s enchanting, and manages to see the beauty in just about everything. That’s why I love this print created by Letter Wright. It’s stunning, full of life and colour, resonating Anne’s personality to a tee. The quote is one of my favourites too – ‘Dear old world, she murmured, you are very lovely, and I am glad to be alive in you’.

Woody Door Stop | I knew I had to share this door stop as soon as I saw it on Instagram – it’s looks like so much fun. Toy Story is a timeless movie – one that I don’t seem to think about a lot these days – but it will always hold a special place in my heart as the first film I saw at the cinema. Getting his hat stuck under the door is such a Woody thing to do. You can find more info about the stop here.

Steven Universe Jewelry Set | Steven Universe is a fandom I’ve only gotten into recently, but even though I’m a mere 10 episodes in, I already know it’s going to be a favourite of mine. These acrylic miniatures created by We’re all Mad Here are amazing – depicting Rose Quartz’s sword and Lion, they’re just what I need to start an unhealthy obsession. So much pink!

Simpsons Pins – Gotta Catch Em All

So apparently today is known as Whacking Day in the Simpson’s universe, and since I have neither a club, nor the ability to ‘whack’ anything, I thought I’d share something I am rather fond of – Simpsons lapel pins.
These bad boys are extra awesome because they mash-up with Pokemon characters. If you’ve ever wondered which Pokemon Homer Simpson would be, well, wonder no more because he’s Blastoise.

Other pins in the collection include Ned Flanders as Nidorino – which I’ve got to say is one of the creepiest things I’ve ever seen, Crazy Cat Lady as Persian – who doesn’t look much different to how I imagine her without clothes anyway, and Krusty as Mr Mime – which is definitely my favourite out of the lot.

If you’re not really a pin lover, there are stickers of every character too. Thumbs Designs have even mocked up fake pokemon cards as well, each with their own set of attacks.

Nelson, or Gengelson, has an ability called Ha! Ha! which causes the opponent 1 damage, and Psyralph’s ‘My Brain Hurts’ causes the opponent to eat glue.. lots of glue.

Check them all out below. Which is your favourite?

Five New Comics Hitting The Shelves This Week

Misfit City

Writer: Kiwi Smith

: Naomi Franquiz

: Boom studios

Nothing’s happened in Wilder’s hometown since they filmed that cult kids’ adventure movie there in the 80s…but that’s ancient history. Until one day, she and her friends come upon a centuries-old pirate map drawn by someone named Black Mary…and find out there might be some REAL adventure in their tiny town after all!

Misfit City looks to be 2017’s answer to those great, imaginative adventure movies we got to watch as kids – you know, The Goonies / ET. Only this time, picture a kick ass team of girls – it’s not just straight white boys who yearn for adventure. If you like Lumberjanes and Goldie Vance, you need to check out Misfit City. Plus, the comic has been written by the queen of girl power movies, Kiwi Smith, who wrote the likes of 10 Things I Hate About You, Legally Blonde, and The House Bunny.

Writer: Al Ewing

: Adam Gorham

: Marvel

It’s a dirty universe out there, even when you’re not regularly mistaken for trash-foraging vermin. And it’s about to get dirtier. He thought his paws were clean, that he was on the up-and-up. But then an old flame swam back into his life, and he was back in the game… the heist game. If you need a safe cracked, a vault busted or a score taken…ask for Rocket. Just don’t call him a raccoon.

We’re all familiar with the cheeky Raccoon that has been gracing our screens recently with the Guardians of the Galaxy, but we’ve only glimpsed his villainous side. Rocket will explore his life of crime in more detail, so if you’re a big fan of the rodent, you need to check this out. The comic is penned by Marvel alum Al Ewing who has written Mighty Avengers and Loki: Agent of Asgard.

Bug: The Adventures of Forager

Writer: Lee Allred

: Michael Allred

: DC Comics

Forager is just one of the Hive before he breaks out of his cocoon and finds himself in a mysterious house in an unknown realm. There he meets all kinds of strange creatures: a ghostly girl, a talking teddy bear and otherworldly weirdos that have literally jumped out of his worst nightmares. But these interdimensional oddballs are nothing compared to the evil General Electric, who is on the hunt for a reality-bending metal that could alter the fabric of life itself. To stay one step ahead of him and preserve the multiverse, Forager must travel through alternate dimensions to seek the metal and, hopefully, catch up with that cagey stuffed bear. If he does it, will he finally be able to distinguish himself as a New God?

Bug is DC’s latest tribute to Jack Kirby for his centenary. Written and drawn by ‘the first family of comics’; Eisner Award winning brothers Lee and Michael, Bug will give you a closer look at some of the more obscure characters from the DC Universe. If you’re looking for something strange but wonderful, and full of colour, this comic needs to be on top of your to buy list this week.

Star Wars: The Screaming Citadel

Writer: Kieron Gillen

: Marco Checchetto

: Marvel

Rebel pilot and rogue archaeologist wander side by side into the darkest shadows of the galaxy as Luke Skywalker reluctantly teams up with Doctor Aphra! The Doctor makes Luke an offer he can’t afford to pass up, one that leads him to a very rare gathering at the heart of the infamous Screaming Citadel. Will Luke find what he’s looking for? Can Aphra be trusted? Or will they both wind up victims of the Citadel’s Queen?

The Screaming Citadel is a crossover between Kieron’s Doctor Aphra series and Jason Aaron’s Star Wars – joining all the characters from both to form a new gothic-horror story. Expect to see the likes of Han and Leia, along with a host of new characters. If you’re a fan of the original trilogy and want to explore the characters a little more, make sure you check this out.

Ghostbusters: Funko Universe

Writer: Troy Dye

: Phillip Murphy

An ancient Japanese prophecy foretold that when the Masters of the Four Winds unite, they would become unstoppable. Instead, the four masters killed each other in battle, proving the prophecy false. More than 600-years later, an ancient shuriken is unearthed, releasing the spirit of one of the masters to seek out and resurrect the other three in order to fulfill the prophecy. Now, the only thing that stands between the undead ninja and the destruction of the land of the living is… the Ghostbusters!

It’s impossible not to love Funko’s Pop Vinyl figures, with their oversized heads and big beady eyes. Now, Funko and IDW are joining forces to bring a us a comic FULL of the adorable toys. If you’re in need of a cute fix, make sure you pick up this one shot.

Join the Night’s Watch

The Game of Throne’s season 7 premiere is still two months away – excruciating isn’t it? On the plus side, that gives you plenty of time to re-watch last season – whilst sobbing as you mumble ‘Hold the Door’ at the television screen.

It also gives you time to apply for a ticket to Sky’s pop-up training camp later this month, where you will be able to watch demonstrations from the stunt team behind Game of Thrones, and become a true member of the Nights Watch.

You will learn skills like archery, sword fighting, and even raven handling – very handy if you ever find yourself in need of a maester.

The event will be held at the Tower of London, on 20th May. You can apply for a balloted ticket, as long as you swear to take no wife, hold no lands, father no children, wear no crowns, win no glory, and live and die at your post.

Just kidding.

You just need to click on this link, and unofficially join the Night’s Watch. You could even be in with a chance of winning a pair of tickets to attend the US premiere of Season 7.

Good luck guys!

The Defenders Trailer Is Finally Here

Netflix have just released the first trailer for their latest venture into the world of Marvel comic book characters. Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist finally meet in this 2 and a half minute trailer for The Defenders, and everything is falling into place.

We also get an idea about who else will be popping up in the new series. It looks like Simone Missick is back as feisty cop Misty Knight, and Rosario Dawson returns as the faithful Claire Temple. Stick is back too, along with Elektra – who we last saw in quite a bad state at the end of Daredevil Season 2.

Most exciting of all though is the appearance of Sigourney Weaver, who will be playing main villain; Alexandra. According to The Defenders writer and producer – Marco Ramirez – Alexandra is a powerful force in New York; sophisticated, intellectual and dangerous. She doesn’t seem to have any comic book history so her role is a bit up in the air right now, but it’s rumoured she’ll play some sort of Kingpin.

The Defenders will be released on Netflix on the 18th August.

Five Awesome Star Wars Gifts For Under £10

Happy Star Wars Day guys! May the fourth be with you and all that jazz.

Before I sit down to watch A New Hope – obviously the greatest Star Wars movie – I wanted to share some of the things on my Star Wars wish list. All of them cost less than 10 squids, so they’re perfect if you’re looking for a little Star Wars day gift for your friends – or me! BUY ME THINGS!

Star Wars Construction Kits

If you love building those Star Wars Lego sets, these are a must. They’re a cheaper, slightly more fiddly alternative, that look more detailed than their Lego counterparts, and are super shiny – calm down magpie Emma. There are lots of different sets available, including a TIE Fighter, X Wing, Speeder, and my favourite – the AT-AT. Each set is only £9.98, and IWOOT are currently offering buy one get one free. Check them out Here.

Star Wars Blueprint Posters

I am obsessed with blueprint posters. I just think they look great everywhere, and they’re super subtle as well. Print Point have some amazing one’s in their Etsy store right now. You can get  blueprints for everything from the Millennium Falcon, to the Death Star. There’s even an Imperial Forces poster that combines all the images into one. The posters are only £5.27, but you only receive a digital copy to print yourself. If you want something physical, check out Stanley Print House who have similar prints available.

Rick & Morty Star Wars Pins

If you love a good crossover, you have to check out these pins by Get A Life Designs. Ever wondered what Rick would look like as a Stormtrooper – well now you don’t have to. The pair have been transformed into cartoon versions of the iconic clones, and they look surprisingly awesome. If you have a bit of a quirky pin fetish, like myself, then these are a must, and they’re only £8. Take a look.

Star Wars Bath Bombs

For the well-kept among you – Star Wars bath bombs exist! As a bit of a Lush fanatic, having a nerdy alternative is an absolute dream. Frakking Bombs have created Millennium Falcon and Han Solo – in carbonite – versions of the fizzy bath treats. They look so sweet, and they’re only £4.02 apiece, scented with Lavender and Vanilla. Check them out here. There are even little Stormtroopers available, £1.61 for two.

Star Wars Tsum Tsums

Another obsession of mine – Disney Tsum Tsum’s. It all started when my sister brought me back Minnie Mouse from Disney Land – now I have about 30 of the things, and I don’t want to stop there. I’ve had my eyes on the Star Wars plushes for a while now because they are some of the cutest I’ve seen. Boba Fett, you will be mine! They are only £3 from the Disney Store.

What’s on your Star Wars wish list? Will you be celebrating May the 4th today? What will you be doing?

Whimsical Disney Bags by Danielle Nicole

With the release of a new live action Beauty and the Beast movie, and the announcement that even more classics will be getting the same treatment, adults everywhere are understandably falling in love with Disney all over again – myself included.

If you are one of those people, you need to stop what you’re doing and check out these stunning bags. Created by Danielle Nicole, in conjunction with Disney, the collection is inspired by the Princesses we all wished we could be at one point in our lives.

Inspired by the likes of The Little Mermaid, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Snow White, and of course Beauty and the Beast, these quirky accessories are full of whimsy. Adorned with glitter and pompoms, and shaped like the characters they represent, they’re perfect for all the modern princesses out there.

My personal favourite is the Flounder crossbody because – cutest fish in the sea – but I’m equally in love with the Cogsworth, and I kind of want that Sleeping Beauty clutch as well – us nap loving ladies need to stick together.

Take a Walk in The Forbidden Forest

Warner Bro’s Harry Potter Studio Tour opened the doors to it’s newest expansion last Friday, and have released a sneak peak for those who haven’t got tickets yet – or those who stupidly went a few weeks before the opening like I did *face palm*

The Forbidden Forest attraction will feature 12 foot trees and an abundance of magical creatures from the Harry Potter movies, including Aragog the Acromentula, and Buckbeak the Hipogriff. You will be welcomed through the Hogwarts gates by Hagrid – lantern in hand, and get the opportunity to weave under gnarled roots and braches.

Learn about the mechanics behind the Whomping Willow, how long it took to add each feather to buckbeacks body, and how long Aragog’s legs really are. Oh, and if you’re scared of spiders like Ron, don’t worry – there is a spider free route you can take. But you’re a wizard right – just blast them with the Lumos spell and run.

Are you excited to enter the Forbidden Forest? If you’ve already been, I’d love to hear what you thought. If you haven’t, you can buy tickets here.

Invader Zim Returns With New TV Movie

It’s been over 10 years since Invader Zim’s short run on Nickelodeon came to an end. Since then it’s become quite the cult classic, so I’m not surprised to hear that they are bringing him back – even if it is just for 90 minute run on TV.

For those of you who have never seen Invader Zim, and who I can only presume had the worst possible childhood, I’ll give you a quick summary of the original series..

Zim, an alien from the Irken Empire, is given a mission to collect intelligence from Earth with the help of GIR – an information retrieval unit / robotic dog. He spends most of his time making plans of world domination, whilst attempting to avoid rousing the suspicion of Dib, a classmate at the school he infiltrated, who is on to him.

According to Nickelodeon, Richard Horvitz will return as Zim, with Rikki Simmons voicing GIR and Andy Berman voicing Dib. It’s also been confirmed that Melissa Fahn will return as Gaz – Dib’s cynical sister. Oh, and don’t forget series creator Jhonen Vasquez, who is on board as well.

The feature film currently has no release date, but a teaser has already been released so we are guessing ‘soon-ish’- though don’t expect anything until after the proposed Hey Arnold movie has hit the small screen. Yes, you heard me, Hey Arnold is apparently coming back as well. Is anyone else experiencing a slight nostalgic heart attack right now?

What do you think of Invader Zim’s return? Are you a fan of the show? What are you expecting from the TV movie

“People of Earth, did you really think you’d seen the last of me? Don’t you know an invader never stops until their mission is complete. I’ve been watching you, waiting, and soon your world will be mine.”
